Responsible Drinking

At Broke & Buzzed, we promote responsible consumption and legal drinking practices.

Drink well, not more

We started Broke & Buzzed so people over 21 could find a better deal on something they were already going to buy. A better price is not a reason to drink more. It's a reason to drink what you like, spend less, and go home safe.

Never drink and drive

If you've been drinking, don't drive. Not "probably fine." Don't. Plan your ride before your first drink.

  • Rideshare: Uber or Lyft.
  • Transit: RIPTA runs across Rhode Island.
  • Designated driver: pick one before you start. Buy them a meal.

Know what a drink actually is

A standard US drink is about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That's:

  • 12 oz of beer at ~5% ABV
  • 5 oz of wine at ~12% ABV
  • 1.5 oz of spirits at ~40% ABV

Most craft beers and mixed drinks are larger or stronger than that. One pint of a 7% IPA is closer to 1.5 standard drinks. Track what's actually in your glass.

Moderation, per the CDC

"Moderate" drinking is up to 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 for men. Less is better. None is also fine.

Do not drink if

  • You're under 21.
  • You're pregnant or might be. No amount of alcohol is known to be safe during pregnancy. Drinking during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and lifelong harm.
  • You're taking medication that interacts with alcohol. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
  • You have a health condition made worse by alcohol.
  • You're about to drive, operate machinery, or be responsible for someone's safety.
  • You're recovering from a substance use disorder.

The US Surgeon General has noted that alcohol use increases the risk of several cancers, including breast, colon, liver, and throat. Drinking less lowers that risk.

Simple habits that help

  • Eat before you drink. Keep eating while you drink.
  • Alternate each alcoholic drink with water.
  • Pace yourself. No more than one standard drink per hour.
  • Don't mix alcohol with energy drinks, cannabis, or medication.
  • Stay with people you trust. Look out for each other.
  • Never pressure anyone to drink. "No" is a full sentence.

If drinking is becoming a problem

You're not alone and you don't have to figure it out by yourself. These are free, confidential, and available now.

  • SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-4357 — 24/7, free, confidential, English and Spanish.
  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988 if you're in crisis.
  • Alcoholics Anonymous: aa.org — meetings near you.
  • Al-Anon: al-anon.org — support for friends and family of people who drink.

Where we stand

We help adults of legal drinking age save money on alcohol they already plan to buy. We do not encourage drinking more, drinking faster, or drinking instead of something else. Accounts that promote unsafe behavior or try to bypass age checks get removed.
